Autumn Walk & Day Retreat // 10.28

October 28th, 3:00 - 5:30pm, in partnership with The Center for Spirituality in Nature, Payton will lead a contemplative experience and short mindful retreat at Charmlee Wilderness park.

As the days grow short and temperatures cool, the natural world is preparing for a season of rest and renewal. Wild spaces teach us so much about preparing for the Sabbath. Join Payton and fellow spiritual seekers in examining what wisdom is gleaned through careful attention to the patterns and practices of the natural world. What can we learn from the plants, critters, and creatures in our own sacred landscapes about being present and open to the sabbath gifts of slowness, spaciousness, rest, renewal, and restoration?

We will meet in the Charmlee parking area off Encinal Canyon Rd. and enjoy a peace-filled walk observing some of the subtle signs of Autumn in Los Angeles’ Coastal landscape. Our time together will also include:

  • Guided Meditation

  • Solo Wandering

  • Nature-based Spiritual Practice

  • Community Conversation

  • Tea & Refreshment

To support the wider programming of The Center for Spirituality in Nature, this experience costs $20. You can buy tickets and register at: https://www.spiritualityinnature.org/event-details/autumn-walk-finding-sabbath-in-nature

We do not want anyone to be unable to participate because of the cost of this program. If the fee is prohibitive for you, please email Payton directly at: payton.hoegh@spiritualityinnature.org

August Wandering // 8.27

Hi wanderers!

In August, our community will be joining friends from St. Stephen’s Hollywood & Saint Be Eagle Rock for a contemplative hike at Ernest Debs Regional Park on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at 11:00am

Trailhead Address: 4235 Monterey Road, Los Angeles, CA 90032

We will meet in the lot of Debs Park and hike up to the small lake. We will have time for a little walk and quiet reflection, as well as our typical dialogue. Debs is described as a “ lovely green space near the Arroyo Seco. Birds are abundant here, and the air will probably be filled with birdsong as you hike its mostly easily-graded trails and fire roads.”

More details on the park are available at: Ernest E. Debs Regional Park in the Arroyo Seco | Modern Hiker

This trail is in Montecito Heights, CA and is part of traditional, sacred, and unceded land of the Chumash, Tongva-Gabrieleño, and other Indigenous peoples. We must be mindful of the fact that this is native land. Consider what that means to you and to us as we hike. How can we best honor the land and those from whom it is stolen?

We encourage all those who live and move on indigenous lands to learn about the history of this land and to be active in responding to the deep wounds caused by colonization. We also ask all who wander with us to support the Tongva Land Conservancy and the indigenous communities who, at great cost, care and have cared for the lands on which we live and walk.

We know that the land we walk together is scarred by layered histories of abuse - culturally and ecologically. Our hikes take place on traditional, sacred, unceded land of many indigenous tribes. We are working to be part of a movement for renewed relationship & restitution.

Regardless of who you are, who you love, your beliefs or understandings, we hope you will feel welcomed, affirmed, embraced, and heard if you wander with us.

We recognize that the very nature of our wanderings requires a level of ability that is not a reality for all. We support one another while hiking our hike. We also recognize that the outdoors is not always a safe and welcoming space for all. We do our very best to create an environment of hospitality that honors the complex realities each person brings with them to the trail.

Please send an RSVP to payton.hoegh@spiritualityinnature.org so we know who to expect!

Spirituality in Nature Winter Solstice Walk // 12.17

Hi wanderers!

As part of our partnership with The Center for Spirituality in Nature, Payton will be leading a Winter Solstice Walk that will curate an intentional, contemplative space for reflecting on the season. We will engage guided meditation and solo reflection alongside slow, mindful walking in nature which will culminate in dialogue on the sacred wisdom offered when we are attentive to the voice of Spirit in the season and evidence of change in ourselves and in our local landscape. This will take place on:

Saturday, December 17, 2022 | 3 - 5pm at the Madrona Marsh Preserve

3201 Plaza del Amo, Torrance, CA 90503

More information and registration for this event can be found at: bit.ly/csn-winter-solstice-la

Here’s some additional details:

In nature, darkness is essential. Trees and plants need time to recharge their cycles. Animals and reptiles and amphibians go underground for much-needed rest and replenishment.

As humans have for thousands of years, together we will honor the Winter Solstice — that time in the Northern Hemisphere when the hours of light are at their minimum. We will explore together how the darkness informs our physical and spiritual being, and how it helps us to see and appreciate the Light that is available in its midst.

Registration for this walk costs $25. All funds are directed to supporting the work of the Center for Spirituality in nature in creating and curating space, opportunity, and instructive resources for deepening spirituality in nature.

We do not want cost to restrict access to this event. If you want to participate but the fee is prohibitive, please email Payton at: payton.hoegh@spiritualityinnature.org

July Wandering // 7.23

Hi wanderers!

Saturday, July 23, 2022 we’ll be wandering together at 4:00pm

Ernest E Debs Regional Park

4235 Monterey Road, Los Angeles, CA 90032

This hike is described as a moderately easy “loop through almost every section of this lovely green space near the Arroyo Seco. Birds are abundant here, and the air will probably be filled with birdsong as you hike its mostly easily-graded trails and fire roads.”

To get to the park: From the 110, take the exit for Avenue 52 and head east. Ave 52 turns into Griffin Ave after a sharp southward turn. The entrance for the Audubon Center will be on the east side of the road just down the street. There is a free parking lot near the Center, but it's small and will most likely be full (the lot closes at 5PM, too). Park on the street and just walk back up the entrance road. Transit accessible with some walking.

Details, directions, and recommendations at: Ernest E. Debs Regional Park in the Arroyo Seco | Modern Hiker

Please note: It is difficult to gauge accessibility for trails. “Moderate” means different things for different people, abilities, and experience. We are a community of support and will help one another enjoy our time on trail and hike as we all feel comfortable.

This trail is in Montecito Heights, California and is part of traditional, sacred, and unceded land of the Chumash, Tongva-Gabrieleño and other Indigenous peoples.
